Marcus House Pool - Bogardo Beat

Marcus House Pool - Bogardo Beat

Ghillie's Wise Words

This pool has become one of our very best. It's up there with Tyndals, Willows, Melgund & Haughs. Like Tollmuir Pool, House Pool is a 'new kid on the block' insofar as it was not properly fished in the past. The reason is that the Marcus Estate fishers used to stand virtually on top of the fish because the main lies are all along and just beneath the N bank. Now we have an arrangement with the Marcus side whereby their anglers do not fish House Pool at all, in return for us not fishing Breadalbane Pool. The result is better fishing for everyone!

Marcus House Pool is about 250 yards long. It is a straight pool with a nice run in at the top and a long stream running over about 4 to 5 feet of uneven river bed providing ideal lies for salmon and grilse under the N bank. Wading is easy and the whole pool can be fished down in one long uninterrupted session. The pool is a complete delight for the novice or experienced fly fisher. It is a pool which produces fish at all levels with the tail section holding good numbers of sea trout in low water and there are also some excellent high water salmon lies in the very tail.

The setting for this shady and prolific holding pool is very peaceful. Marcus House, although no icon of architectural achievement, is beautifully located and the pool, now fished only by FCW anglers, benefits from the property's privacy and seclusion. I expect this pool to rate more highly in the FCW as rods come to recognise it as a top pool and therefore take the trouble to get down to the bottom end of Bogardo Beat to fish it. There's three hours fishing in this pool & a half day in good water conditions. Don't miss out on its magic: this is a great pool. My advice is always to fish the top section twice- at least!
