Martin's Cut - Bogardo Beat

Martin's Cut - Bogardo Beat

Ghillie's Wise Words

While it is just about possible to fish the top of this narrow pool from the north bank, it is much better to approach it from the track along the south bank from where, by skirting the tail of Indies Pool, you can arrive at the turbulent head stream of Martin's Cut.

This pool, like Craigo Stream on Castle Beat, is a high energy part of the river in it's position at the foot of a short, steep gradient. Martin's Cut is aptly named because it is a narrow and deep gravel runnel, the bed of which is strewn with boulders and lie stones. It is not an easy pool to fish, the challenge being to get the fly down to a sufficient depth to engage the fish lying close to the bed of the river where the current is slowed by the uneven bottom. The trick is to use fast sinking lines and leaders and a heavy and chunky fly. The key to success is to achieve depth.

There are always fish lying in this pool, and they are catchable by the assiduous angler. Most people give the pool a few desultory casts before moving on downstream to fish the far easier Tollmuir Pool. Don't do that if you want to maximise your chance of a fish!
